Throughout history, the dynamics of queenship and power have been a subject of great fascination. In sixteenth-century Castile, the issue of legitimacy and conflict arose, shaping the course of royal reign and creating a complex political landscape.

Queen Isabella of Castile, who ruled from 1474 to 1504, established a strong and centralized monarchy. Her marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon united the two powerful kingdoms, leading to the formation of modern Spain. Isabella's reign was marked by her intense focus on religious matters, particularly the Catholic reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula.

Upon her death, their daughter Joanna the Mad became the queen of Castile. However, Joanna's mental instability soon led to conflict and power struggles within the kingdom. This raised important questions about the role of a queen and the legitimacy of her rule.

Joanna's absence from ruling and her confinement in a monastery raised concerns among the nobility. Her husband, Philip the Handsome of Habsburg, took over the administration of Castile, which further exacerbated tensions. The power vacuum created by Joanna's incapacity sparked conflicts between various factions vying for control.

During this period, the concept of legitimacy played a critical role in determining the queenship and power dynamics. The hereditary right to rule was undoubtedly important, but the ability to govern effectively and maintain stability also became paramount concerns.

Many viewed Joanna as unfit to rule due to her mental condition. This perception placed her legitimacy under scrutiny and fueled resistance from those who sought a more stable leadership. The struggles for power in Castile pitted different factions against each other, all vying for control over the queen and the kingdom.

The Habsburgs, in particular, pursued their interests against the backdrop of legitimacy. They sought to consolidate their power and influence through their marriage ties to Joanna and their claim of being the rightful heirs to the throne. However, their ambitions were met with resistance from other noble families who saw their dominance as a threat to the balance of power.

The conflict over queenship and power during the sixteenth century was not limited to internal struggles within Castile. International politics also played a significant role in shaping the legitimacy debate. The marriage alliances forged by the Spanish monarchy, their involvement in European affairs, and the pressure from other foreign powers further complicated the situation.

These external factors added an extra layer of complexity to the already tangled web of legitimacy and conflict. The queen's authority and the stability of the monarchy relied not only on her domestic legitimacy but also on recognition from other rulers. Diplomatic negotiations and strategic alliances were crucial in establishing legitimacy and securing the position of queenship.

The conflict surrounding Joanna's queenship ultimately led to the War of the Communities, a rebellion against the Habsburg rule. The rebellion was fueled by grievances against the Habsburg administration and their perceived interference with Castilian autonomy. The war served as an expression of discontent and a demand for a more legitimate and accountable form of governance.

While the war ended in the defeat of the rebels, it highlighted the power of legitimacy and the significance of conflict in shaping queenship and power dynamics. The outcome of the conflict influenced the subsequent reigns and set the stage for future challenges to royal authority in Castile.

, the sixteenth century in Castile witnessed a period of intense conflict and debate over the legitimacy of queenship and the exercise of power. The mental instability of Queen Joanna, foreign interference, and internal power struggles all contributed to a complex political landscape. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for comprehending the evolution of queenship and power throughout history.

This book examines the deep and lengthy crisis of legitimacy triggered by the death of Prince Juan of Castile and Aragon in 1497 and the subsequent ascent of Juana I to the throne in 1504. Confined by historiography and myth to the madwoman’s attic, Juana emerges here as a key figure at the heart of a period of tremendous upheaval, reaching its peak in the war of the Comunidades, or comunero uprising of 1520–1522. Gillian Fleming traces the conflicts generated by the ambitions of Juana’s father, husband and son, and the controversial marginalisation and imprisonment of Isabel of Castile’s legitimate heir. Analysing Juana’s problems and strategies, failures and successes, Fleming argues that the period cannot be properly understood without taking into account the long shadow that Juana I cast over her kingdoms and over a crucial period of transition for Spain and Europe.
