Hans and his sister Gretel have a rough life. With a father whose memory and reason was lost in an accident they live a poor but honorable life in Holland. They and their Mother struggle daily to make ends meet. Hans and Gretel long to participate in December's great ice-skating race on the canal. They have little chance of doing well on their handmade wooden skates but Hans is saving up to buy steel ones. When there is a chance to pay for a Doctor to cure his father’s illness Hans chooses to sacrifice his hard earned wages. But there is hope yet, Hans sacrifice will have better outcomes than he could have ever dreamed. A tale of friendship, self sacrifice, and love. Illustrated.
