Lights, camera, action! The glamorous world of movies, admired by audiences worldwide, is not only about glitz and glamour. Behind the scenes, the motion picture industry drives substantial economic growth, generating jobs, promoting tourism, and boosting local economies. From Hollywood blockbusters to independent films, the influence of this thriving industry extends far beyond the silver screen.

The Ever-Growing Box Office Sales

Over the years, box office sales have skyrocketed, becoming a significant source of revenue for the movie industry. According to recent reports, the global box office revenue reached an astonishing $42.2 billion in 2019, showcasing the immense popularity of films. Blockbusters such as "Avengers: Endgame" and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" shattered box office records, proving that movies have the power to captivate audiences and generate substantial profits.

Job Creation and Economic Stimulus

The movie industry's impact on job creation cannot be overstated. Filmmaking requires an army of talented professionals, from producers and directors to actors, cinematographers, and set designers. These productions often involve complex supply chains, giving rise to a wide range of ancillary industries. Jobs are created not only on set but also in areas such as catering, transportation, and equipment rentals, thus providing employment opportunities for countless individuals across various sectors.

Beyond the direct job creation, the economic ripples caused by the motion picture industry expand even further. Consider the tourism boom that often accompanies the release of films set in exotic locations. Movie enthusiasts are inspired to visit these destinations, generating revenue for hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. From bustling city streets to picture-perfect rural landscapes, movies help places shine on the global stage and draw tourists eager to experience the magic firsthand.

Investments and Tax Incentives

In recent years, governments worldwide have recognized the potential economic benefits of attracting film productions to their regions. Consequently, many countries and states have implemented generous tax incentives, encouraging filmmakers to choose them as shooting locations. These incentives range from tax credits and rebates to exemptions from sales tax on production-related expenses. By investing in the movie industry, governments spur economic growth, create jobs, and showcase their regions to a global audience.

The Power of Intellectual Property

Intellectual property is the crown jewel of the motion picture industry. Successful films not only make money through box office sales but also through licensing agreements, merchandise sales, and digital streaming. From action figures and clothing to theme park attractions and video games, the massive fan bases cultivated by films provide substantial revenue streams that extend long after a movie's initial release. Intellectual property creates a lasting legacy and allows the industry to continue reaping economic benefits for years to come.

From the overwhelmingly successful box office sales to the ripple effect of job creation and tourism, the economic impact of the motion picture industry is undeniable. Films not only entertain and inspire, but they also drive economic growth on a global scale. Governments, businesses, and local economies all benefit from the movie-making prowess of Hollywood and the international film community. As audiences eagerly await the next cinematic masterpiece, the economic impact of the motion picture industry will continue to reach new heights, making it a vital player in shaping the world's economy.

Iceland has various comparative advantages as a player in the motion picture industry and has made good use of them. The Icelandic government has had an important role in supporting the film industry, and studies have shown that for each Icelandic crown in government contributions to the sector, society in general receives four crowns in return. The motion picture industry is already an important element of the Icelandic economy. This book reviews the economics of the motion picture industry in Iceland, discussing supply and demand, production issues, and the significant business risks in the sector. It shows how film is an important part of cultural life and the creative industries both in Iceland and elsewhere. Sidebars through the book give short biographies of twenty-nine individuals who have made their mark on the international motion picture industry over the past hundred years.

Ágúst Einarsson is Professor of Economics at Bifröst University in Iceland and is also the university's former rector. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg and has also served as CEO of a major Icelandic fisheries company, as a member of the Icelandic parliament, and as a professor and dean at the University of Iceland. He is the author of twenty-three books.
