Our world is diverse, filled with people from different ethnic backgrounds, cultures, and races. In a bid to promote equality, many have advocated for a colorblind approach, where we treat everyone the same, regardless of their race or ethnicity. While the intention behind colorblindness is noble, it often fails to address the underlying issues that people from marginalized communities face. To truly progress as a society, we must go beyond colorblindness and embrace our ethnic journey of redemption.

The Problem with Colorblindness

Colorblindness, although well-intentioned, tends to ignore the historical and social context that has led to the existing inequalities. By pretending not to see color, we unintentionally perpetuate the erasure of cultures and experiences that have shaped individuals and communities. It is not enough to merely acknowledge someone as an individual; we must also recognize and celebrate their unique cultural heritage.

Colorblindness often overlooks the systemic barriers that hinder marginalized communities from achieving equality and justice. Ignoring these barriers creates a cycle of disadvantage that further marginalizes these groups. To break this cycle, we need to acknowledge the existence of systemic racism and actively work towards dismantling it.

Embracing Our Ethnic Journey

Instead of striving for colorblindness, we should aim for a society that celebrates and embraces our ethnic journey. This journey begins with acknowledging the historical experiences and struggles faced by different communities. By understanding the past, we can appreciate the present diversity and work towards a better future for all.

In this journey of redemption, education plays a crucial role. Schools should incorporate inclusive curriculums that teach students about diverse cultures and the contributions of different ethnic groups. By acknowledging the accomplishments of these groups, we empower individuals from marginalized communities and foster a sense of belonging for all.

Media representation also plays a significant role in our ethnic journey. A diverse range of stories, characters, and voices should be given the platform they deserve. By amplifying underrepresented voices, we challenge stereotypes and promote a more inclusive society. This can be achieved through supporting diverse media outlets, advocating for equal representation in the industry, and amplifying marginalized voices on social media platforms.

Building Authentic Relationships

Another crucial aspect of our ethnic journey is building authentic relationships with individuals from different backgrounds. We should actively seek to engage with people who have different ethnicities, cultures, and experiences. By doing so, we can foster empathy, understanding, and create opportunities for dialogue that expands our worldview.

It is essential to listen and learn from those whose experiences differ from our own. By stepping outside of our comfort zones and hearing their stories firsthand, we gain a deeper understanding of the inequalities and challenges they face. This understanding prompts us to advocate for change and stand in solidarity with those fighting for justice and equality.

Colorblindness, while well-intentioned, falls short of addressing the systemic racism and inequalities that persist in our society. By going beyond colorblindness and embracing our ethnic journey, we can actively work towards a more inclusive and just future.

Let us celebrate our cultural heritage, acknowledge and rectify historical injustices, and build authentic relationships that foster empathy and understanding. Together, we can embark on a journey of redemption that paves the way for a better tomorrow.

For a generation or so, society has tried to be colorblind. People say they don’t see race. But this approach has limitations. In our broken world, ethnicity and racial identity are often points of pain and injustice. We can’t ignore that God created us with our ethnic identities. We bring all of who we are, including our ethnicity and cultural background, to our identity and work as God's ambassadors.
Ethnicity and evangelism specialist Sarah Shin reveals how our brokenness around ethnicity can be restored and redeemed, for our own wholeness and also for the good of others. When we experience internal transformation in our ethnic journeys, God propels us outward in a reconciling witness to the world. Ethnic healing can demonstrate God's power and goodness and bring good news to others. Showing us how to make space for God's healing of our ethnic stories, Shin helps us grow in our crosscultural skills, manage crosscultural conflict, pursue reconciliation and justice, and share the gospel as ethnicity-aware Christians.
Jesus offers hope for healing, both for ourselves and for society. Discover how your ethnic story can be transformed for compelling witness and mission.
