Vikings: The Most Interesting Stories, is a short book for those who have not been very interested in the Vikings so far, but fans of the Vikings vibe can also find something for themselves. What did the Vikings play? What was the role of women in their society? (Also in mythology),were they really as terrifying as Hollywood portrays them? We will read about the torture they used and deal with popular myths about the Vikings.

Vikings - Scandinavian warriors, who since the 8th century have undertaken distant expeditions of merchant, robber or settlement character.

The word "Viking" comes from the name of the defensive sea expeditions: "Viking". The word was originally combined with the Old Nordic vik (bay) or Old Germanic vik (port settlement). In the form of a viking, vicingas was first used to describe small pirate groups in an Anglo-Saxon Widsith poem from the 7th century.

Later, however, it was noted that the word appeared as early as in the 8th century (before the period of the Vikings' attack on the coasts of England, Ireland and France) in the form of the Old English Vicingscead and Old French witsing. Since then, the name of the Viking began to be combined with this very language area, pointing to the Old English vice meaning a trade camp. The first time this term was used long before the Viking era for Saxon settlers.

The Old Nordic female noun Viking means an overseas expedition. It appeared in runic inscriptions of the Viking era and later medieval writings (e.g. in the established phrase fara í víking "to set out on an expedition"). In later texts, such as Icelandic Sagas, the phrase "to set out on a Viking" means participation in a dandruff or piracy expedition. The Old Nordic male noun víkingr, derived from this, refers to sailors or warriors taking part in overseas expeditions and appears in the poetry of the scaldes and on runic stones found in Scandinavia. Before the end of the Viking era it had no negative connotations. Regardless of the etymology, it was used as a term for activity and people connected with it, without taking into account ethnic or cultural affiliation.

The Vikings were known as the Ascomanni ("Ashmen") among the Germans, the Lochlands ("Watermen") among the Celts and the Dene ("Danes") among the Anglo-Saxons.
