The Ultimate Guide to Making a Living on the Road: Truck This For Living
Are you tired of the nine-to-five grind and dreaming of a life on the open road? Look no further than trucking as a career. With the freedom to explore new places, the opportunity to earn more than the average office job, and the chance to experience the beauty of the country, trucking is an exhilarating and fulfilling profession. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore everything you need to know about trucking as a way to make a living and live life on your own terms.
What is Trucking?
Trucking, also known as long-haul trucking or over-the-road trucking, involves transporting goods over long distances using commercial trucks. These trucks are typically large, powerful vehicles that can haul heavy loads across the country. Truckers are responsible for managing their schedule, making timely deliveries, and ensuring the safety of their cargo. It is a demanding profession that requires excellent driving skills and a strong work ethic.
The Advantages of Trucking
Trucking offers numerous advantages that make it an appealing career choice for many individuals. Firstly, the potential earnings in the trucking industry are higher than in many other professions. With experience and dedication, truckers can earn a comfortable living and even own their own trucking business.

Secondly, trucking offers a high level of flexibility and independence. Unlike traditional office jobs, truckers have the freedom to choose when and where they work. This allows them to create a schedule that fits their lifestyle and enjoy more time with their family and loved ones. It also provides an opportunity to explore new places and see the country up close.
Additionally, trucking allows individuals to escape the monotony of a traditional desk job. Instead of being confined to an office cubicle, truckers experience the ever-changing landscape of the open road. They get to witness breathtaking sunsets, explore hidden gems, and form a connection with the vast expanse of the country.
The Requirements for Becoming a Trucker
Before embarking on a career in trucking, it's essential to understand the requirements and qualifications needed. Firstly, all truckers must possess a commercial driver's license (CDL). The process of obtaining a CDL involves passing a written exam, a skills test, and a medical examination to ensure fitness for duty.
Trucking companies may also have additional requirements, such as a clean driving record and a certain number of years of driving experience. It's important to research and choose a reputable trucking company that aligns with your goals and values.
The Different Types of Trucking
Trucking is a diverse field with various specializations and niches. Some truckers prefer long-haul driving, where they transport goods across the country. Others may opt for regional trucking, staying within a specific region but still enjoying the freedom of the road. There is also the option of becoming a specialized trucker, such as transporting hazardous materials or oversized loads.
Each type of trucking offers its own set of challenges and rewards. It's essential to explore the different options and find the one that suits your skills and interests the best.
Earning Potential in Trucking
One of the main reasons why people choose trucking as a career is the earning potential. While the earnings can vary based on factors like experience, location, and type of trucking, truckers can earn a solid income. According to recent statistics, the average annual salary for a truck driver in the United States is around $45,000, with experienced drivers making over $70,000 per year. Additionally, some independent truckers have reported earning even higher incomes by running their own successful trucking businesses.
Challenges of Trucking
Like any profession, trucking comes with its own set of challenges. One of the most significant challenges is the time spent away from home and loved ones. Long-haul truckers may spend weeks on the road, which can be physically and emotionally demanding. However, with proper planning and effective communication, many truckers find ways to balance work and personal life.
Another challenge is the sedentary nature of the job. Spending long hours sitting behind the wheel can lead to health issues like back pain and weight gain. It's crucial for truckers to prioritize their health by incorporating exercise and healthy eating habits into their routine.
Tips for Success in the Trucking Industry
For those considering a career in trucking, here are a few tips for success:
- Research and choose a reputable trucking company.
- Invest time and effort in obtaining a commercial driver's license.
- Stay updated on industry regulations and changes.
- Take care of your health and incorporate exercise into your routine.

There are many books about driving trucks that always seem to glamourise the profession with a vision of gleaming chrome disappearing into the dusk on the wide open road, heading for freedom.
This book doesn’t.
This is the true grit, dirty end of the industry where the work is hard and monotonous, the food is crap, the showers are unbelievably filthy, the lay-bys stink, fellow motorists abuse you on a daily basis, the police and authorities try to catch you out at every turn, and the boss is always on the phone asking where you are and what time will you be there and what the hell have you been doing all this time?
This is the multi-drop deliveries during rush hour in an unknown town without a map.
This is the disapproving looks in the service station shop when you’ve been on the road for 5 days straight without a shower.
This is the crinkly sound of a turd desperately exited into a carrier bag when there are no public toilets for 30 miles.
This is the thumping headache of a disturbed nights’ sleep when a refrigerated lorry parks next to you at the truck stop.
This is the UK transport industry.
These are the words of a UK trucker.
