The Beginnings of Richard Maxwell

Richard Maxwell, an American playwright and director, founded the New York City Players in 1999. With a background in performance art and a passion for pushing artistic boundaries, Maxwell sought to create a company that would challenge traditional notions of theatre.

Maxwell's early works were characterized by their minimalistic approach, prioritizing dialogue and simple staging over lavish sets and costumes. This stripped-down aesthetic allowed the actors' performances to take center stage, drawing audiences in with their raw emotion and authenticity.
