An Award Winning Educator's Rules For Discovering The Successful Student In Every Classroom
Every educator dreams of having a classroom filled with highly successful students. As teachers, we aim to nurture and guide our students towards achievement, growth, and lifelong success. But what does it take to truly discover the successful student within each child? Today, we delve into the insightful rules of an award-winning educator who has mastered this art.
Rule #1: Recognize Individual Strengths and Passions
One of the crucial steps towards discovering a successful student is recognizing their unique strengths and passions. Every child brings something exceptional to the table, be it creativity, analytical skills, leadership qualities, or empathy. By identifying and nurturing these individual strengths, we can create an environment where students can excel.
Rule #2: Foster a Growth Mindset
The next rule in our journey to uncovering successful students is cultivating a growth mindset. Encouraging students to believe in their ability to improve, learn from mistakes, and embrace challenges lays the foundation for success. By emphasizing effort over talent, we instill resilience and perseverance in our students, enabling them to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.

Rule #3: Provide a Supportive and Inclusive Environment
Creating a supportive and inclusive environment is pivotal in discovering the successful student in every classroom. By fostering a sense of belonging, trust, and acceptance, we empower our students to explore their abilities without fear of judgment. This environment allows them to take risks, express their thoughts, and collaborate with peers, leading to holistic growth and achievement.
Rule #4: Encourage Independence and Critical Thinking
A successful student is not just someone who excels academically, but someone who can think critically and independently. Encouraging students to ask questions, analyze problems, and explore various perspectives helps develop their cognitive abilities, problem-solving skills, and decision-making prowess. By igniting their curiosity, we equip them with the tools to become lifelong learners.
Rule #5: Set High Expectations and Provide Necessary Support
Setting high expectations is essential for discovering the successful student within each child. By challenging our students and believing in their potential, we inspire them to strive for excellence. Alongside high expectations, providing necessary support, resources, and guidance is equally crucial. This empowers students to bridge the gap between their current abilities and the level of achievement they desire.
Rule #6: Cultivate a Love for Learning
A successful student is someone who feels a genuine love for learning. As educators, our role is to spark curiosity and ignite the flame of passion for knowledge. Creating engaging and relevant learning experiences, incorporating real-world applications, and celebrating the joy of discovery instill a lifelong love for learning in our students.
Uncovering the successful student in every classroom requires a combination of recognizing individual strengths, fostering a growth mindset, providing a supportive environment, promoting independence and critical thinking, setting high expectations, and cultivating a love for learning. By following these rules, we as educators can help each student unlock their full potential and lead them on a path towards lifelong success.

When Ron Clark walked into his fifth-grade class in rural North Carolina, he was confronted with a tremendous challenge. The children had little interest in learning, and were sorely lacking in guidance. How would he transform a group of apathetic kids into disciplined, thoughtful, and curious students? He quickly realized that they needed to learn some basic rules.
Clark compiled a list of 55 lessons, and soon, his fifth-grade students--who once struggled to read at the third-grade level--were reading at the sixth-grade level . . . and loving it. What's more, they were gaining something crucial-self-respect. Those 55 lessons evolved into what Clark calls The Essential 55 -- guidelines for living and interacting with others.
The Essential 55 will prepare parents and educators to teach students the rules for life -- everything from knowing how to say thank you, to acing an interview.
