to the Armenian Genocide

The Armenian Genocide, also known as the Armenian Massacres, refers to the systematic extermination and forced deportation of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire. This genocidal campaign was orchestrated by the ruling Committee of Union and Progress (CUP),commonly referred to as the Young Turks.

Spanning from 1915 to 1923, the Armenian Genocide resulted in the death of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians through massacres, forced deportations, death marches, and other atrocities. The events of this period still resonate within the Armenian community and are a subject of continuing debate and international recognition.

The Historical Context

To comprehend the Armenian Genocide, one must understand the historical context in which it took place. The Ottoman Empire was experiencing a decline during this period, losing territories and facing internal pressures. The Young Turks, aiming to create a homogenous Turkish state, saw the Armenian population as an obstacle to their nationalist agenda.

The Armenian population, predominantly Christian, was seen as a threat due to their distinct cultural and religious identity. Consequently, nationalist elements within the Ottoman Empire saw the elimination of the Armenians as a means to strengthen their own version of Turkish society.

The Massacres and Deportations

The systematic nature of the Armenian Genocide is what distinguishes it from other acts of violence in history. Under the guise of World War I, the Young Turks carried out a carefully planned extermination strategy. Armenian intellectuals, community leaders, and professionals were rounded up and executed in an attempt to eradicate the Armenian elite.

The remaining Armenian population was subjected to widespread violence, rape, torture, and forced labor. Many were forcibly deported, marching hundreds of miles to desolate regions without access to food, water, or shelter. These death marches resulted in numerous deaths due to exhaustion, starvation, and disease.

Recognition and Denial

While the Armenian Genocide is widely recognized by many countries and historians as an act of genocide, there are still nations that deny or refrain from acknowledging the events as such. Turkey, the successor state of the Ottoman Empire, has been at the center of this denial.

Political influences, fear of reparations, and ongoing tensions in the region have all contributed to Turkey's reluctance to accept responsibility for the Armenian Genocide. However, the continued efforts of Armenian communities and global recognition campaigns have put pressure on Turkey to reassess and acknowledge the events more fully.

Legacy and Importance of Remembering

The Massacre of the Armenians holds immense historical and cultural significance. Remembering and discussing this tragedy serves as a reminder of the consequences of ethnic cleansing and genocide.

Furthermore, the recognition of the Armenian Genocide is essential for healing and reconciliation between nations and communities. Acknowledgment of past atrocities can provide a foundation for fostering understanding and preventing future acts of similar magnitude.

The Massacre of the Armenians by the Turks of the Ottoman is a harrowing chapter in human history. The systematic extermination and forced deportation of the Armenian population left an indelible mark on the world and the collective memory of the Armenian people.

By understanding the historical context, mechanisms of denial, and the importance of recognition, we can work towards ensuring that such horrific events are never forgotten or repeated. Remembering the Armenian Genocide fosters empathy, encourages dialogue, and acts as a catalyst for change.

During 1915 to 1923, one and a half million Armenian people were deported and killed in the most appalling ways comprehensible. They were ripped from their homes (in a land where they had lived for longer than history can tell, a land so old that many speculate it was the site of the biblical Garden of Eden) and sent off on death marches across the blistering Syrian Desert. They were shot on the thresholds of the houses where they were raising their children. They were butchered with swords in gruesome ways in order to dishearten those left alive.

They were starved in concentration camps, they were burned and drowned and beaten to death by the thousands, and then their corpses were stripped naked and left to rot in the open air. They were overdosed with morphine. They were injected with infected blood. They were cast overboard into the frigid Black Sea. They were gassed. They were raped. They were abducted and sold as slaves.

In short, the Ottoman Empire under the Three Pashas made every possible attempt to exterminate the Armenian race with such fervor that their actions would inspire the creation of the very word that now defines the greatest crime that can be perpetrated against a civilization: genocide. Yet today, the Armenian Genocide is an event that has melted out of the collective consciousness. It is an event that has repercussions extending to the modern day and is an event that should never be forgotten.
