The Klongs of Bangkok - Discover the Hidden Gems of Thailand
Thailand, with its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and welcoming people, has always been a popular destination for tourists from all around the world. While places like Bangkok offer bustling city life and iconic landmarks, there is a hidden gem that many tourists often overlook - the Klongs of Bangkok.
The Klongs, also known as canals, are an integral part of Bangkok's history and culture. These waterways were once the lifeline of the city, acting as transportation routes, sources of freshwater, and even a means of defense. Today, they offer a unique glimpse into the traditional way of life and showcase the authentic charm of Thailand.
The Historical Significance of the Klongs
The origins of the Klongs can be traced back to the 15th century when Bangkok (then known as Ayutthaya) was established as the capital of the Kingdom of Siam. The Klongs were initially dug to create a defensive moat around the city, protecting it from invading forces.

Over time, the Klongs evolved and played a vital role in the city's development. They became a transportation network, enabling the movement of goods and people within and between communities. The Klongs also served as a primary source of freshwater for daily activities, such as cooking, cleaning, and irrigation.
Explore the Klongs - A Glimpse into Old Bangkok
While modernization and urbanization have changed the face of Bangkok, the Klongs remain a captivating reminder of its rich history. Exploring these waterways takes you on a journey back in time, offering a glimpse into old Bangkok and its traditional way of life.
One of the most popular ways to experience the Klongs is through a long-tail boat tour. These narrow, wooden boats are navigated by skilled locals who will guide you through the intricate network of canals. As you cruise along the waterways, you'll witness picturesque scenes of stilt houses, floating markets, and lush greenery.
Don't forget to bring your camera along, as the Klongs provide countless photo opportunities. The vibrant colors of the boats, the scenic views, and the smiling faces of the locals create a visual spectacle that will leave you in awe.
Discover Hidden Gems along the Klongs
Exploring the Klongs goes beyond the typical tourist attractions. As you venture deeper into the canals, you'll stumble upon hidden gems that are off the beaten path.
One such gem is the Artist's House, known locally as "Baan Silapin." This 200-year-old wooden house has been transformed into an art gallery, showcasing traditional Thai paintings and performances. The peaceful ambiance and scenic views make it an ideal spot for relaxation and creativity.
Another must-visit destination along the Klongs is the Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn. This iconic landmark, with its intricate architecture and stunning views of the Chao Phraya River, is a testament to Thailand's rich cultural heritage.
Preserving the Klongs - A Sustainable Approach
With the modernization of Bangkok, many Klongs have been filled or narrowed, resulting in their gradual disappearance. Recognizing the importance of preserving this cultural heritage, initiatives have been taken to revive and restore the Klongs.
The Thai government, in collaboration with local communities, has implemented various projects to ensure the sustainability of the Klongs. These initiatives include regular cleaning and maintenance, promoting eco-tourism, and raising awareness about the significance of the canals.
As you plan your trip to Thailand, don't miss out on the opportunity to explore the Klongs of Bangkok. These hidden gems offer an enriching experience that allows you to connect with the country's vibrant history and culture. From the historical significance of the canals to the hidden treasures that lie within, the Klongs of Bangkok will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on your journey.

I write this book without any comments and let the pictures speak for themselves, because pictures often say more than many words. In this sense, have fun watching.
I own all rights to the books and pictures, including the publishing rights of the persons shown.
I was born in 1951 in Mannheim, Germany, as the 4th child and 2nd son of a family in which many things were not optimal. From the age of 2 months I spent my life with my grandparents, the parents of the woman who gave birth to me. My grandparents were very poor, but tried to do everything they could. Although I have 5 siblings, I grew up more or less as an only child with my grandparents. Till this day, I am not still aware of who my father was.
I’m a forwarding agent and accountant by professional, but my life's journey allowed me to go many ways, practise many professions, get to know many ups and downs. I realized my weaknesses during my early youth in Asia. I spent a lot of my life there in Thailand, which is the main topic of my books: Thailand. In the course of many years, I have been able to acquire a great deal of knowledge about the culture and laws of the country. On many travels in Thailand, these pictures were taken.
