Madagascar has been a fascination for me for most of my life. I don’t know if it was watching my lifelong hero, Steve Irwin, catch Panther Chameleons alongside a red dirt road, or the loveable personality of the Kratt brothers’ lemur friend, Zoboomafoo. Madagascar is an island full of life found nowhere else - life that’s strange, like the Dr. Seuss plants of the spiny forest, and life that’s cute, like the lemurs and geckos - all things friendly and curious to a child’s imagination. There’s never been a time that I wouldn’t say Madagascar was my dream trip, my if-you-could-go-anywhere-in-the-world destination.
During a month spent on The Eighth Continent, I traveled in a crowded local taxi-brousse across the country to climb to the tops of the tsingy rock formations and hug the grand baobab trees, made my way in a 4X4 to volunteer at a rescue center for endangered lemur species, went snorkeling in an underwater canyon, saw some of the world’s rarest species of birds and reptiles, and flew on a less than reliable airline to fall in love with orphans at a children’s home. Please join me on the uniquely magical island of Madagascar.
