The play takes a deep dive into the choices these women made and the consequences they face. It examines the eternal question: "Can women truly have it all?" Through witty banter and intellectual debates, "Rapture Blister Burn" explores the societal expectations placed on women and the internal struggles they face in pursuit of happiness.

The play grapples with the notion that grass is always greener on the other side. Catherine, feeling unfulfilled in her career and personal life, decides to take a break and reconnect with her old flame, Gwen's husband, Don. As Catherine and Don embark on an affair, the play explores the complexities of desire, regret, and the pursuit of what we perceive as missing in our lives.

Gina Gionfriddo's razor-sharp dialogue challenges conventional notions of love and relationships. She avoids simplistic answers, instead opting for a nuanced exploration of the human heart. Through Catherine's journey, the play examines the sacrifices, compromises, and trade-offs we make in relationships, leaving audiences questioning their own choices.

As the play unfolds, we witness the clash of ideologies between Catherine and Gwen. While Catherine cherishes her independence and career aspirations, Gwen yearns for the time she sacrificed raising a family. The two characters embody different stages of life, each grappling with its inherent challenges.

The male characters in the play, represented by Don and Catherine's former flame, Avery, provide a contrasting perspective. Through their interactions, we witness the different expectations and pressures placed on men in relationships. The play challenges the traditional notion of masculinity and exposes the vulnerabilities that lie beneath the surface.

What makes "Rapture Blister Burn" truly compelling is its ability to resonate with audiences from all walks of life. While the play specifically focuses on the experiences of women, its themes of identity, self-discovery, and navigating the complexities of relationships are universal. It puts a mirror up to society's expectations and questions the paths we choose.

The blurring of boundaries between the personal and the professional is another central theme in "Rapture Blister Burn." Catherine's academic work merges with her personal life, leading to a clash between her intellectual pursuits and her relationships. The play prompts us to reflect on the choices we make in pursuit of success and fulfillment, and the impact they have on our personal lives.

Gionfriddo's masterful storytelling and the raw authenticity of the characters breathe life into "Rapture Blister Burn." It invites introspection and encourages viewers to question the societal norms they have internalized. By challenging the status quo, the play stimulates discourse around modern relationships and the roles we play within them.

, "Rapture Blister Burn" shines a spotlight on the complexities of modern relationships with its captivating storytelling and thought-provoking themes. As audiences immerse themselves in the lives of Catherine, Gwen, Alice, and the male characters who intertwine with them, they are confronted with their own notions of love, longing, and the choices they make. Gionfriddo's script serves as a poignant reminder that true fulfillment lies not in conforming to societal expectations, but in embracing our authentic selves.

Women are running for president. Men are exfoliating. It's all jumbled: you can't read the signs.

Can any woman have it all? After university Catherine and Gwen chose opposite paths: Catherine built a career as a rock-star academic, while Gwen built a home with a husband and children. Decades later, unfulfilled in opposite ways, each woman covets the other's life, and a dangerous game begins as each tries to claim the other's territory. Sparks fly and the age-old question arises: what do women really want?

Gina Gionfriddo dissects modern gender politics in this breathtakingly witty and virtuosic comedy, set in a small New England college town. Traversing the experiences of women across the generations, this play is a hugely entertaining exploration of a new style of feminism, ripe for the twenty-first century.

Rapture, Blister, Burn was commissioned by Playwrights Horizons, where it premiered, with funds from the Harold and Mim Steinberg Charitable Trust. It received its UK premiere at the Hampstead Theatre, London, in January 2014.
