Archaeologists like Kaveh Basmenji have devoted their lives to unraveling the mysteries of Neolithic Scotland. Through meticulous excavations and scientific analysis, they have pieced together the puzzle of our ancient past, offering tantalizing insights into the lives of those who dwelled here thousands of years ago.
Unveiling Secrets: Kaveh Basmenji's Excavations
For over two decades, Kaveh Basmenji has been at the forefront of archaeological research in Mainland Scotland. His passion for unearthing hidden historical narratives has led him to numerous sites that were previously shrouded in mystery.
One such remarkable discovery was the Ness of Brodgar, a complex archaeological site situated on the Orkney Islands. Kaveh Basmenji, in collaboration with a team of dedicated researchers, unearthed an extensive complex of stone buildings and a plethora of artifacts, including jewelry, pottery, and Neolithic art.
Basmenji's excavations at the Ness of Brodgar shed new light on the religious and ceremonial practices of the Neolithic people. The presence of these complex structures hints at a highly developed society with advanced architectural knowledge.
Journey to Skara Brae: The Neolithic Village
No exploration of Neolithic Scotland would be complete without a visit to Skara Brae, the exceptionally well-preserved ancient village on the main island of Orkney. Kaveh Basmenji's extensive studies of this site have provided invaluable insights into the daily lives of its inhabitants.
Skara Brae, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a unique window into the past, offering a glimpse into the homes of our Neolithic ancestors. The dwellings, crafted from stone and surrounded by the remnants of a rich community, bear witness to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of these early settlers.
Thanks to Kaveh Basmenji's meticulous research, we now have a clearer understanding of the social structure, domestic activities, and even the furniture and tools used by the people of Skara Brae. It is truly a journey through time that captivates the imagination.
Standing Stones: Guardians of the Past
Scattered throughout Mainland Scotland are solitary standing stones, mute witnesses to the ancient rituals and beliefs of Neolithic communities. These monolithic structures, often aligned with celestial events, were an integral part of the Neolithic landscape.
With Kaveh Basmenji as our guide, we delve into the significance of these standing stones. How were they erected? What purpose did they serve? Through careful analysis of these magnificent structures, Basmenji has teased out their importance in religious ceremonies, astronomical observations, and even as markers of territorial boundaries.

Archaeologists show us how the Neolithic human lived in mainland Scotland
What was life like in Scotland between 4000 and 2000BC? Where were people living? How did they treat their dead? Why did they spend so much time building extravagant ritual monuments? What was special about the relationship people had with trees and holes in the ground? What can we say about how people lived in the Neolithic and early Bronze Age of mainland Scotland where much of the evidence we have lies beneath the ploughsoil, or survives as slumped banks and ditches, or ruinous megaliths?
Each contribution to this volume presents fresh research and radical new interpretations of the pits, postholes, ditches, rubbish dumps, human remains and broken potsherds left behind by our Neolithic forebears.

What was life like in Scotland between 4000 and 2000BC? Where were people living? How did they treat their dead? Why did they spend so much time building extravagant ritual monuments? What was special about the relationship people had with trees? Why was so much time and effort spent digging holes and filling them back up again?
What can we say about how people lived in the Neolithic and early Bronze Age of mainland Scotland where much of the evidence we have lies beneath the plough soil, or survives as slumped banks and filled ditches, or ruinous megaliths?
This book will draw together leading experts and young researchers to present fresh research and outline radical new interpretations of the pits, postholes, ditches, rubbish dumps, human remains and broken potsherds left behind by our Neolithic forebears. Much of this evidence has come to light in the past few decades, putting the emphasis very much lowland, mainland Scotland as opposed to more famous Orcadian Neolithic sites. Inspired by the work of Gordon Barclay, the leading scholars of Scotland’s Neolithic in the last 40 years, the chapters in this book offer a wide-ranging analysis of the evidence we have for the first farmers in Scotland.
