In the annals of the American Civil War, one particular brigade stands out as a symbol of bravery, resilience, and sacrifice. The Pettigrew Kirkland Macrae Brigade, composed of soldiers from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Mississippi, etched its name into history through its deeds on the battlefield. Made up of men from various backgrounds, this group's determination and unity earned them a special place in the hearts of many Americans.

The Pettigrew Kirkland Macrae Brigade, also known as the "P.K.M. Brigade," served under several notable Confederate generals during the war, including General James Johnston Pettigrew, General William W. Kirkland, and General William Macrae. These commanders recognized the potential of the soldiers under their command and entrusted them with crucial tasks throughout the conflict.

One of the most significant moments in the brigade's history came during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Under General Pettigrew's leadership, the brigade played a pivotal role in Pickett's Charge, the ill-fated assault that witnessed some of the war's bloodiest and most intense moments. Despite facing heavy casualties, the P.K.M. Brigade pressed forward, displaying unparalleled courage in the face of overwhelming odds.

The story of the P.K.M. Brigade extends beyond Gettysburg. They participated in numerous battles, such as Antietam, Cold Harbor, and Chickamauga. Their unwavering determination made them formidable opponents for the Union army. Time and time again, they fought valiantly, leaving their mark on the battlefields of the American South.

What set the P.K.M. Brigade apart from other units was the camaraderie that developed among the soldiers. In the midst of the chaos of war, they found solace and strength in each other's company. United by a common cause, these men formed an unbreakable bond that kept them going through the toughest of times.

The P.K.M. Brigade's legacy is not only defined by their military prowess but also by their unwavering commitment to their homeland. These soldiers believed in the principles they were fighting for, and they were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their states and their way of life.

As the war drew to a close, so did the chapter of the P.K.M. Brigade. Many soldiers had fallen, and those who survived faced a changed world. However, their memory lives on as a testament to the bravery and resilience of the men who fought under the P.K.M. banner.

Today, historians and Civil War enthusiasts continue to study and celebrate the Pettigrew Kirkland Macrae Brigade. Their contributions to the war effort remain remarkable and serve as a reminder of the extraordinary acts carried out by ordinary individuals.

The Pettigrew-Kirkland-MacRae Brigade was one of North Carolina's best-known and most successful units during the Civil War. Formed in 1862, the brigade spent nearly a year protecting supply lines before being thrust into its first major combat at Gettysburg. There, James Johnston Pettigrew's men pushed back the Union's famed Iron Brigade in vicious fighting on July 1 and played a key role in Pickett's Charge on July 3, in the process earning a reputation as one of the hardest-fighting units in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Despite suffering heavy losses during the Gettysburg campaign, the brigade went on to prove its valor in a host of other engagements. It marched with Lee to Appomattox and was among the last Confederate units to lay down arms in the surrender ceremony.

Earl Hess tells the story of the men of the Pettigrew-Kirkland-MacRae Brigade, and especially the famous 26th North Carolina, chronicling the brigade's formation and growth under Pettigrew and its subsequent exploits under William W. Kirkland and William MacRae. Beyond recounting the brigade's military engagements, Hess draws on letters, diaries, memoirs, and service records to explore the camp life, medical care, social backgrounds, and political attitudes of these gallant Tar Heels. He also addresses the continuing debate between North Carolinians and Virginians over the failure of Pickett's Charge.
