The Untold Story: Unraveling the Mystery of the Kurds and Their Homeland
The Beginning of an Odyssey
They have long been designated the world's largest ethnic group without a country of their own. Their rich history and cultural heritage remain unknown to many. I embarked on an extraordinary journey in search of the Kurds and their elusive homeland, eager to shed light on their remarkable story.
A Fascinating Tapestry of Culture and Identity
The Kurds, a resilient and ancient people, inhabit a vast region spanning Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. From the majestic mountains of southeastern Turkey to the fertile plains of Iraqi Kurdistan, their diverse landscapes have shaped their vibrant customs, language, and unique identity. The thread connecting the Kurds transcends borders, providing a sense of unity despite political and territorial divisions.
Unraveling Historical Threads
To fully comprehend the complexity of the Kurdish question, it was necessary to delve into the historical narratives that have defined their struggle for self-determination. From the ancient Medes to the illustrious Saladin and the Kurdish uprisings of the early 20th century, each chapter of their past reveals tales of resilience, resistance, and passion for independence.

The Millennial Struggle for Autonomy
Throughout history, the Kurds have faced numerous challenges in their quest for a homeland. From the Sykes-Picot Agreement to geopolitical power struggles, external forces have often dictated their fate. Despite facing oppression and persecution, the Kurds have remained resolute in their determination for autonomy, fostering a sense of pride that resonates even in their darkest hours.
Humanizing the Voices: Tales of Hope and Resilience
Beyond the history books and academic debates, I sought to capture the essence of the Kurdish struggle by spending time with individuals who have experienced their plight firsthand. Listening to heart-wrenching stories of displacement, loss, but also hope and resilience, I was overwhelmed by their unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
Untapped Potential: The Kurds and their Contributions
Not limited to their struggles, the Kurds have also made significant contributions to various fields. From literature and arts to military prowess, their unique perspective and talents have left an indelible mark on the world. By showcasing their cultural achievements, I aimed to challenge misconceptions and promote a more nuanced understanding of the Kurdish people.
Preserving Identity: The Fight Against Cultural Erosion
In the face of cultural assimilation and diminishing traditions, the Kurds have fiercely held onto their customs and language. I visited remote villages, witnessing passionate efforts to preserve their rich heritage through music, dance, and storytelling. It became evident that safeguarding their identity is not merely a collective duty but a rallying cry that echoes in the hearts of every Kurd.
The Call for International Recognition
As I concluded my journey, I couldn't help but ponder the significance of the international community's recognition of the Kurdish struggle. Despite the intricate geopolitical challenges, promoting inclusive dialogue and empowering the Kurds to have a voice in shaping their own destiny seems not only justifiable but imperative. By giving the Kurds the platform they deserve, we have the potential to rewrite history and pave the way for a brighter future.
Join the Journey: Discovering the Kurds
The story of my search for the Kurds and their country is far from over. As I continue my quest to shed light on their untold stories, I invite you to join me on this extraordinary journey of discovery. Forty years after the publication of Margaret Kahn's book, Children of the Jinn, Kurds, the fourth largest linguistic and ethnic group of the Middle East, are still being denied basic human rights. The book is an historical and ethnographic account of the lives and struggles of the individuals she met during the year Iraqi Kurds rose up, with American backing, to wrest their rights from the Ba'athist regime. In the Iranian border town where she lived, she witnessed the arrival of a hundred thousand refugees. She volunteered in the refugee school and saw first-hand what happened when the U.S. government reneged on its promises. She traveled by land over the Turkish border and was trailed by secret police aiming to suppress Kurdish rights. The book is also an intensely readable account of what it means to navigate a totally different culture. In a bygone world where international telephone connections were lacking and the internet did not exist, Kahn went from her native America to Iranian cities and then into remote mountain villages to learn more. Children of the Jinn tells the intimate tale of how she came to better understand the people whose story and culture she had fallen in love with. This second edition features many new photographs of the people described in the book as well as a glossary and a recommended reading list.
