A fiery and effective performer, Billy Cunningham's exceptional and unusual leaping ability earned him the name the "Kangaroo Kid." An intense competitor who played with enormous desire, under Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, Cunningham took his place in the fabled UNC bloodlines. A fabulous collegian and pro player Cunningham shot to stardom when he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1966. In 1967, he teamed with fellow Hall of Famers Wilt Chamberlain and Hal Greer to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to the NBA title. After playing for Philadelphia from 1965 to 1972, he signed a free agent contract with the ABA's Carolina Cougars and was named league MVP. Cunningham returned to the 76ers in 1974. In 1983, he coached the 76ers to the NBA crown. At 6-foot-7, Cunningham was one of the great undersized rebounders in basketball. When he retired in 1976, the 76ers retired his number 32 jersey.
