Our Thirty Year Journey To End Gender Violence: Breaking the Silence, Building Hope
When we reflect on the past three decades, we cannot help but feel a sense of accomplishment. Our commitment to bringing an end to gender violence has led us on a remarkable journey filled with struggles, triumphs, and countless stories of resilience. Today, as we proudly celebrate thirty years of tireless efforts, we want to share how far we have come and the path that lies ahead.
The Birth of a Movement
It all began in 1991, a time when gender violence was often swept under the rug, ignored, or even glorified in various forms of media. Our founders, fueled by a burning desire for change, embarked on a mission to break the silence and give a voice to the countless survivors who had been relegated to the shadows.
With unwavering dedication and a fierce determination, we started working towards a future where no person, regardless of their gender, would have to endure the pain and fear caused by violence. Our journey to end gender violence had officially begun.

Empowering Survivors and Communities
Over the years, we realized that to make a lasting impact, we needed to empower not only survivors but also the communities that sustain them. We developed comprehensive programs focused on prevention, education, and support.
Through workshops, awareness campaigns, and counseling services, we aimed to change societal norms, challenge harmful beliefs, and provide survivors with essential tools to rebuild their lives. By creating safe spaces for survivors to share their experiences and offering strong support networks, we helped them find their voice and realize their inherent strength.
Breaking Cultural Barriers
One of the biggest challenges we faced on our journey was breaking through the cultural barriers that perpetuated gender violence. Deeply ingrained patriarchal norms inhibited progress and made it difficult to address the root causes of violence.
However, we persevered. Through strategic partnerships with local organizations, engaging with community leaders, and lobbying for policy changes, we slowly but steadily dismantled the walls of systemic oppression. Our approach was based on empathy, inclusivity, and the recognition that change cannot happen overnight, but only through collective efforts.
Technology as a Catalyst
As technology advanced and transformed the world, we saw tremendous potential in leveraging its power to further our cause. We embraced digital platforms, developed online resources, and expanded our reach to every corner of the globe.
With the advent of social media, we harnessed its ability to amplify diverse voices and inspire global conversations. From viral campaigns to interactive webinars, our digital presence served as a catalyst for change, raising awareness and mobilizing communities like never before.
The Road Ahead
Today, as we reflect on our thirty-year journey, we do so with gratitude and a renewed determination. We have made incredible strides, changing countless lives along the way. But we are also acutely aware that our work is far from over.
Gender violence still persists, and new challenges arise as society evolves. We must adapt, innovate, and remain vigilant. Our vision for the future is one where every individual can live free from fear, violence, and discrimination.
The Power of Unity: Joining Hands for Change
If there is one lesson we have learned on this thirty-year journey, it is that real change only happens when we stand together. We invite you to join hands with us, to lend your voice, your skills, and your passion to our shared mission.
You can make a difference, whether by volunteering at a local shelter, speaking out against gender violence, or supporting our cause financially. Together, we can end gender violence once and for all.
Breaking the Silence, Building Hope
As we look towards the future, we envision a world transformed—a world where gender violence is nothing but a dark chapter in our history books. It is within our reach, but only if we continuously push forward, united in our resolve.
Our thirty-year journey has taught us that hope is a powerful force that can overcome even the most entrenched societal norms. Together, we will break the silence, build hope, and create a future where gender violence is no longer a reality for anyone.

“An elegant, impassioned demand that America see gender-based violence as a cultural and structural problem that hurts everyone, not just victims and survivors… It's at times downright virtuosic in the threads it weaves together.”—NPR

From the woman who gave the landmark testimony against Clarence Thomas as a sexual menace, a new manifesto about the origins and course of gender violence in our society; a combination of memoir, personal accounts, law, and social analysis, and a powerful call to arms from one of our most prominent and poised survivors.
In 1991, Anita Hill began something that's still unfinished work. The issues of gender violence, touching on sex, race, age, and power, are as urgent today as they were when she first testified. Believing is a story of America's three decades long reckoning with gender violence, one that offers insights into its roots, and paths to creating dialogue and substantive change. It is a call to action that offers guidance based on what this brave, committed fighter has learned from a lifetime of advocacy and her search for solutions to a problem that is still tearing America apart.
We once thought gender-based violence--from casual harassment to rape and murder--was an individual problem that affected a few; we now know it's cultural and endemic, and happens to our acquaintances, colleagues, friends and family members, and it can be physical, emotional and verbal. Women of color experience sexual harassment at higher rates than White women. Street harassment is ubiquitous and can escalate to violence. Transgender and nonbinary people are particularly vulnerable.
Anita Hill draws on her years as a teacher, legal scholar, and advocate, and on the experiences of the thousands of individuals who have told her their stories, to trace the pipeline of behavior that follows individuals from place to place: from home to school to work and back home. In measured, clear, blunt terms, she demonstrates the impact it has on every aspect of our lives, including our physical and mental wellbeing, housing stability, political participation, economy and community safety, and how our descriptive language undermines progress toward solutions. And she is uncompromising in her demands that our laws and our leaders must address the issue concretely and immediately.
