Raf Coastal Command Hardest Fight Against The Boats Air Campaign 15
Raf Coastal Command played a vital role during World War II in protecting the Atlantic convoys against the German U-boat menace. One of the most challenging battles they faced was known as the Air Campaign 15, which tested their skills and determination to the limits.
During the early years of the war, convoys were often attacked by German U-boats, causing significant damage to the Allied supply lines. In response, Raf Coastal Command was formed to focus on anti-submarine warfare and protecting the convoys.
The Air Campaign 15 was launched by the German Navy in an attempt to disrupt the Allied supply lines and weaken their resolve. They deployed a large number of U-boats armed with torpedoes to target the convoys, aiming to sink as many ships as possible.

Raf Coastal Command had to find a way to counter this threat effectively. They utilized various tactics including submarine-hunting aircraft, radar technology, and long-range patrols to locate and engage the enemy submarines.
One of the key challenges faced by Raf Coastal Command was the limited range of their aircraft. The U-boats could attack the convoys far from the British coast, meaning the aircraft had to fly over long distances to reach the battle zone. This necessitated the development of long-range aircraft such as the Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the Boeing Fortress.
The B-24 Liberator was a four-engine heavy bomber that had the capability to fly long distances without refueling. This plane played a crucial role in extending the reach of Raf Coastal Command and increasing their effectiveness in countering the U-boat threat.
Another important aspect of their campaign was the use of radar technology. Raf Coastal Command equipped their aircraft with radar sets to detect the presence of U-boats beneath the water. This gave them a crucial advantage in locating and attacking the enemy submarines before they could cause significant damage to the convoys.
The air crews of Raf Coastal Command were trained extensively in anti-submarine warfare tactics. They would conduct long-range patrols, searching for any signs of U-boats. Once located, they would coordinate with Allied surface ships to launch coordinated attacks on the enemy submarines.
The Air Campaign 15 took a heavy toll on both sides. The U-boats were determined to sink as many ships as possible, while Raf Coastal Command was equally determined to protect the convoys. The battle became a game of cat and mouse, with both sides utilizing their skills and strategies to gain the upper hand.
Despite the difficulties faced by Raf Coastal Command, they managed to successfully protect the convoys and limit the U-boat attacks. Their efforts were instrumental in turning the tide of the war in favor of the Allies.
The Air Campaign 15 marked a turning point in the battle against the U-boat menace. Raf Coastal Command's dedication and bravery played a crucial role in securing the Atlantic convoys and ensuring the flow of supplies to the Allied forces. Their hardest fight against the boats showcased their capabilities and their commitment to victory.
, Raf Coastal Command's struggle during the Air Campaign 15 was one of their most challenging battles during World War II. Through the implementation of innovative tactics, the use of advanced technology, and the courage of their air crews, they successfully protected the convoys and played a significant role in defeating the German U-boat threat. Their hardest fight against the boats will always be remembered as a testament to their determination and sacrifice.

At the start of World War II, few thought the U-boat would be as devastating as it proved to be. But convoys and sonar-equipped escorts proved inadequate to defend the Allies' merchantmen, and the RAF's only offensive weapon was the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft. For RAF Coastal Command, the first two years of the war were the hardest. Although starved of resources, operating with outdated aircraft and often useless weaponry, they were still the only force that could take the fight to the U-boats.
But in these two years, the RAF learned what it needed to win the Battle of the Atlantic. Gradually developing new tactics and technology, such as airborne radar, signals intelligence, and effective weaponry, the Allies ended 1941 in a position to defeat Dönitz's growing fleet of U-boats. This book, the first of two volumes, explains the fascinating history of how the RAF kept the convoys alive against the odds, and developed the force that would prevail in the climactic battles of 1942 and 1943.
